To ‘Build Canada Strong’ the government shouldn’t have to make nature protections weak. In a recently announced discussion paper, the federal government asks Canadians to consider a concerning proposal for how “nation-building” projects could be fast-tracked.

The proposal aims to weaken the guardrails that uphold environmental integrity, Indigenous rights, and community wellbeing. If it goes through as written, it will set the conservation clock back by decades.

The government asked Canadians to share their feedback through a consultation process. Thousands of you have already done so and we thank you. Building Canada’s economy shouldn’t come at nature’s expense. Raise your voice, this could shape Canada for generations.

We must continue to share our concerns. Can we count on you to speak up for nature by sending a letter to the ministers and your local MP?

I support getting projects built efficiently, but not by weakening the environmental laws that protect nature and communities. As written, this proposal pulls back the progress we’ve made in conservation by decades:

- It allows the government to ignore legal protections for Species at Risk, enabling project approvals that could result in the extinction of species like the Southern Resident Killer Whale. 
    - Creating “Federal Economic Zones” opens the door for projects to be pre-approved without needing an assessment of potential environmental and social impacts, nor  consultation with affected communities. 
    - Limiting federal impact assessments to one year regardless of the project’s complexity, means approvals could move forward without understanding the implications on the surrounding people and nature, which could result in meaningless mitigation measures. 
    - Concentrating permits and approvals with one minister could reduce transparency and open the door for species and habitats to be treated as trade-offs for industrial opportunity. 
    
Nature protection is nation-building infrastructure. We can’t make Canada strong if we build on a foundation we’ve already broken. Please revise this proposal to meet the needs of the economy, while keeping environmental protections, community consultations and Indigenous engagement firmly in place.
