Bill C-30 Pest Control Products Act¹allows Ministers in the government to override scientific decisions on the use of pesticides previously banned by Health Canada.

This marks the most significant setback in Canadian pesticide regulation in over a generation, jeopardizing environmental safety, wildlife, and human health.

Both of these groups of birds rely on insects as their main food source. When the insects are poisoned, the birds starve.

These toxic chemicals don't stay in the fields. When banned pesticides are re-approved, they wash into our soil, seep into our shared drinking water, and leave chemical residues on the produce we buy.

Dear MP {user_data~MP First Name} {user_data~MP Last Name}, Minister of Health Marjorie Michel, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Julie Dabrusin, and The Right Honourable Mark Carney,

I am writing to you as a constituent in your riding who is deeply concerned and troubled by the recent amendments to Canada’s Pest Control Products Act (PCPA) that received royal assent on June 18th, 2026.

As you may know, since the 1970s, populations of Canada’s iconic grassland birds, such as the Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark, have plummeted by 67%. Our swallows and swifts have experienced a 43% decline as well according to the 2025 State of Canada’s Birds Report. Both of these bird families depend on insects as their main food source. Allowing the use of pesticides previously banned by Health Canada without review measures puts their continued survival, species at risk, and environmental health severely at risk under Bill C-30’s amendments to the Pest Control Products Act (PCPA).

Not only will these changes have significant environmental and wildlife health impacts, but this amendment will also jeopardize human health and our food systems. In fact, twenty-one scientists and researchers have pointed out the many environmental and human health concerns with these amendments to the Pest Control Products Act in Bill C-30 and C-31 (https://sencanada.ca/Content/Sen/Committee/451/NFFN/briefs/NFFN_SM-C-30_Scientists_e.pdf).

I echo their concerns and agree it is unacceptable in 2026 to disregard and allow Cabinet to override the science-backed pesticide research and risk assessments they show to humans, the environment, wildlife and Species at Risk.

I am urging you as a Member of Parliament to repeal Bill C-30 and Bill 31 as well as:
→ Encourage your fellow Members of Parliament and the Minister of Health to not use these powers to override science-backed pesticide risk assessments.
→ Remove the ability for the pesticide industry to promote their own harmful products in the name of “economic security”.
→ Do not eliminate the 15 year cyclical pesticide assessment review.
→ Strengthen Canada’s Pest Control Products Act with human, wildlife and environmental health in mind.

As insects, species at risk, and bird populations continue to decrease, Canada should be reducing harmful pesticides that cause their declines—not bringing them back.
