Canada is on fire. This year's fire season, the second worst since the 2023 wildfire season, has seen wildfires consume 3.7 million hectares (CBC). That’s six times the area of Prince Edward Island! Fueled by climate change, wildfires are getting hotter, faster, and harder to control. Smoke is choking cities across North America, threatening countless lives.

We’re burning through Indigenous communities, wildlife habitats, and carbon-rich boreal forests, yet Canada still doesn’t have a coordinated national wildfire strategy. Firefighters are stretched to their limits, communities are exposed, and nature, our best defense against climate change, is going up in flames.

It doesn’t have to be this way. We need a federally led Emergency Wildfire Strategy that centres Indigenous knowledge, strengthens prevention, and restores ecosystems.

Dear Prime Minister and Ministers responsible for safeguarding nature,

Canada is burning. Wildfires are intensifying year after year, destroying forests, threatening communities, and overwhelming emergency response systems. This year's fire season, the second worst since the 2023 wildfire season, has seen wildfires consume 3.7 million hectares. That’s six times the area of Prince Edward Island! The health effects of wildfire smoke are being felt across the country and even beyond our borders, while Indigenous communities and ecosystems suffer disproportionate harm.

Despite this, Canada still lacks a coordinated national wildfire strategy that will:

- Protect communities
- Advance Indigenous cultural practices and sovereignty
- Support the transition to ecologically sustainable forestry
- Accelerate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from all sectors of the Canadian economy

This is not just a forestry issue, it’s a national emergency. We can’t afford any further inaction.
