Bill C-73 is supposed to give Canadians assurance the government won’t be able to back out of its 2030 Nature Strategy promises including protecting 30 percent of land and ocean by 2030, Indigenous-led conservation, and ensuring that the “triple threats” of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution are met by a coordinated effort across the whole government.

WILL POLITICAL GAMES PUT ALL OUR PROGRESS AT RISK?

Bill C-73 needs amendments to make sure it can accomplish its purpose and it needs to get passed before there’s an election. If not, we could lose it all.

We need all parties to work together on this. Don’t let them put political games ahead of action for nature.

I AM WRITING TODAY TO ASK YOU TO PUBLICLY GIVE YOUR POSITION ON THE PROPOSED CHANGES TO STRENGTHEN THE NATURE ACCOUNTABILITY ACT AND GET IT PASSED BEFORE THE NEXT ELECTION.

Here’s what I’d like to hear from you:

“I will do what I can to strengthen Bill C-73, the Nature Accountability Act, and get it passed without delay. There’s no reason we can’t get this done right together.”

Nature needs our help. Canadians want you to help take care of nature by ensuring that our policies and legislative tools are strong. If we take care of nature, then it can continue to take care of us by providing clean air and water.

We need you to be a hero for nature. DON'T BE A HOLDOUT. You have an opportunity to send a message to Canadians that nature matters to you by passing Bill C-73, with strong amendments, as soon as possible.

The idea of the Nature Accountability Act is to give the 2030 Nature Strategy some teeth. With a strong bill, Canada can hopefully avoid the mistakes associated with its efforts to meet the previous global biodiversity commitments which went unfulfilled because there was nothing to hold the government accountable for its progress.

The Nature Accountability Bill, in its current form, is not robust enough: it does not outline clear consequences for governments failing to execute the Strategy nor does it actually enshrine the targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in the legislation.

Nature Canada and its partners have ensured that all your political parties have the detailed amendments needed to make the legislation stronger and more precise. It is so important that this legislation does not stall!

TODAY WE NEED CLARITY ON WHO WILL CHAMPION THIS ACTION FOR NATURE AND WHO WILL BE RESPONSIBLE IF IT FAILS.
